York

On tour with Smedley

The experience began with a tour of York, Smedley being our tour guide. Smedley was very funny, dressed head to toe in 16th Century attire. He escorted us to numerous historical sites and shared the gruesome stories about why they were famous.                                  After the tour, we all headed inside the dungeons where we watched 11 live actor shows telling the story of 2000 years of York’s dark history. We learned about some of the most famous characters from York’s past including Vikings, Margaret Clitherow and Guy Fawkes. Educational benefits aside, it was scary! The lights kept going off and you wouldn’t know where the actors were going to pop up. The scariest part was the show based on Isabella Billington who was accused of witchcraft in the 17th Century. She was locked in a cage alongside Ms Savazzi, but kept managing to escape! We were all screaming (some of us with laughter). It was a frightening but amazing adventure teaching us about York’s spooky past. It was made even better by our teacher taking us to McDonald’s afterwards to calm our nerves.
